Class Descriptions
we aim to make yoga accessible to those new to yoga.
our vinyasa and ashtanga classes are available to students of all levels of fitness and offer a more challenging series of postures to develop and refine strength, balance and agility
what starts out as impossible, with daily practice becomes possible; we show images of advanced yoga practitioners as inspiration! we don't expect students to enter any pose until a firm foundation has been developed and progress unfolds organically, at each individual's natural pace
"practice and all is coming"
Introduction to Ashtanga Yoga: Vinyasa Class vinyasa offers a continuous stream of postures focusing on coordinating movement with the breath and internal forms of the practice; classes move at a steady pace causing deep internal heat, enhancing concentration, relaxing the mind and strengthening the muscular and nervous systems; vinyasa classes are set to an energetic backdrop of global fusion music . . . prepare to sweat
WHAT TO WEAR
Comfortable clothes that stretch are best. sweat pants and tshirt are fine. we practice yoga in barefeet. socks are slippery and are not recommended during class. it is nice to bring a warm sweatshirt to wear during our relaxation (sivasana) portion of class.
WHAT TO BRING
bring your own yoga mat if you have it; otherwise we will provide one. an open mind and receptive heart are also nice to show up with. we recommend bringing a friend to help motivate you to continue coming!
WHAT TO EXPECT
you can expect a class tailored to your level of fitness. this is a traditional form of yoga, from which all forms of American "Power Yoga" derive. we will be learning and practicing the Primary Series, which forms the foundation for all six series of ashtanga yoga. focus is placed heavily upon the breath. Alignment, internal bandhas, flow and postures or asanas will be taught, with hands-on adjustments for helping you establish muscle memory and improve energetic alignment.
The Primary Series is described as a first step: it realigns the structure of the body (bones, muscles, joints, posture), so that well-being, strength, balance and mental clarity are enhanced. Practitioners report decreased back pain, improved mobility and joint function, decreased stress, improved metabolism, and happiness.
Asanas are described in English and Sanskrit, and include a combination of standing and seated postures in a prescribed sequence. Please communicate with your instructor about any injuries or physical issues you may bring with you to class so that modifications can be offered to maximize the benefits for your body.
It is said that ASHTANGA YOGA IS FOR ANY BODY, BUT IT IS NOT FOR EVERY BODY. We recommend that you give it a fair try of at least 6 weeks to see if is for you!
